Services

The Services page in the Device Window allows authorised administrators to view and control Windows services on an online managed device.

It is intended for support and operational maintenance where service state needs to be checked or changed remotely.

Where to find services

Open the Device Window for a managed device, then select Services.

The Services page shows Windows services reported by the target device. Available actions depend on the signed-in user's permissions.

Supported actions

Lanview can support service actions such as:

  • viewing services
  • starting a service
  • stopping a service
  • restarting a service
  • changing service startup type

Service actions are sent through Lanview Server to Lanview Client. The Client performs the device-side operation using the supported Windows service control mechanism.

Startup type

Changing startup type affects how Windows starts the service in future.

Permissions

Service permissions include:

PermissionAllows
device.services.viewView Windows services on devices.
device.services.startStart Windows services.
device.services.stopStop Windows services.
device.services.restartRestart Windows services.
device.services.edit_startup_typeChange Windows service startup types.

Assign service control permissions to roles that need operational control of devices.

Audit behaviour

Lanview audits service control actions.

Audit records can include service start, stop, restart and startup type changes.

Reason prompts may apply depending on the Lanview Server configuration and the action being performed.

Common problems

A service action fails

Windows may refuse a service action because of dependencies, permissions, service state or the service's own behaviour.

The device must be on when the action is triggered.

Review the result returned by Lanview and check the service state again after the action.

Restart does not work

A restart is normally a stop followed by a start. If the service cannot stop or cannot start, the restart will fail.

The service list is not current

Refresh the service list if the page supports it. Service state may have changed since the last query.

Operational guidance

Stopping or restarting services can disrupt users and applications.

Before changing a service, check:

  • the service name and display name
  • whether users are likely to be affected
  • whether the service has dependencies
  • whether the change is temporary or permanent
  • whether the action should be linked to a ticket or change record

Console commands

Service related commands are available in the command reference.
