Console Overview
Lanview includes console surfaces for administrators who need command-based control or diagnostics.
The console is an administrative command surface. It is not a way to bypass Studio permissions. Lanview Server still performs authentication, permission checks, reason policy checks and audit recording.
Console surfaces
Lanview can expose console commands through:
- Studio Console
- Lanview AdminConsole
Not every command is available from every console source. Command metadata and the command reference should be used to confirm where a command can be run.
When to use the console
Use the Lanview console when:
- a command-based task is faster than the Studio user interface
- a diagnostic command is needed
- a Server status or configuration check is required
- the documentation or support process specifically asks for a console command
- a local recovery or break glass procedure is being followed by an authorised administrator
For routine administration, Studio is usually clearer and safer.
Permissions
Console permissions include:
| Permission | Allows |
|---|---|
studio.module.console | Access the Console module in Lanview Studio. |
server.console | Run permitted console commands where available. |
Feature-specific permissions also apply.
For example, a user with console access still needs the relevant permission to run commands that affect devices, groups, packages, settings or security.
Authentication and reason prompts
Some console paths require a Lanview operator session.
Some commands may require a reason when Lanview Server reason policy is enabled.
The command reference shows command specific permission, source, risk, audit and reason metadata where available.
Audit behaviour
Lanview audits security sensitive and state-changing console activity according to command metadata and Server audit configuration.
Audit records can include login, logout, permission denied, missing reason and feature-specific command events.
Command output should be handled carefully because it may include operationally sensitive information.
Useful command families
Common command families include:
help
command.meta
action.list
server.status
security.status
config.*
Common problems
A command is not available
The command may not be allowed from the current console source, or the signed-in user may not have permission.
A command asks for a reason
Reason prompts are controlled by Lanview Server configuration and command metadata. Enter a meaningful reason that matches the organisation's policy.
A command works locally but not remotely
Some commands may be restricted to local console or AdminConsole sources.
Guidance
For high-impact commands, check the command reference first. Confirm the target, permission, audit behaviour and allowed source before running it.
